Meet the most important, most used and misunderstood organ in the entire human body – The heart.
For centuries the human heart was considered to be the seat of human emotion, intellect and consciousnesses. The Tibetan Buddhists claim to this day that the seat of the mind lies in the heart. The heart it is said works with the brain to in-form consciousness. Then modern science came along and proved that the heart was actually a complex muscular pump, constantly pumping blood round our body, bathing it in life-giving oxygenated blood. It brings in vital necessities and takes away waste.
The story does not end there , technological advancements are bringing to light phenomenal new insights that may in fact prove that the heart is what the ancients always claimed it was; the seat of human emotions.
Say hello to your Heart.
How well do you know your heart? Other than the fact that it does not once rest during the organism’s entire lifetime, most people know almost nothing about this fascinating organ. For instance did you know that the human heart beats a staggering 2,575,440,000 times in an average lifetime of 70 years? Imagine a man-made product being tested for functional efficiency in a simulated testing environment somewhere, and you begin to appreciate the robust efficiency of the human heart. At the center of the human circulatory system, this wonderful little muscular pump sits and squeezes blood into the vast network of blood vessels that pervade the human body.
The Anatomy of the Heart
Simply put, the heart is a tube. Blood flows in from one end, and the heart muscles squeeze it out the other side with valves to efficiently stop the backflow of blood. The blood vessels that bring in blood to the heart are called veins and those that move it out are called arteries, with the biggest one called an Aorta. That said, the circulation of blood in the bodies is an amazingly complex process in itself. There are two types of circulations, Pulmonary and Systemic. Pulmonary circulation squeezes blood through the lungs where it picks up oxygen, and discharges carbon dioxide. The freshly oxygenated blood is carried to various parts of the body through systemic circulation. The muscles, skin, bones and the other organs draw energy from the oxygenated blood.
Cardiovascular Disease – Threats to your heart
Considering that this is arguably the most important part of the body, it is also the one that is least cared for. People who otherwise studiously wash out their hands with disinfectants are surprisingly careless with their heart, either clogging the arterial linings with a fatty substance called Cholesterol through careless eating or through not exercising the body enough. Badly cooked food or carelessly chosen ingredients are the prime causes of cholesterol build up in the heart. Especially Junk food rich in
Hydrogenated Oils are a constant danger in the diets of human beings especially the little ones. Considering that you only get one heart in a lifetime, it is incredible that people allow this little muscular pump to break down into problems like Coronary Thrombosis, also known as the Heart attack.
Exercise is often thought to only aid in the growth of muscles. But few people know that exercise also helps in the formation of anastomoses, alternative paths that form between the blood vessels of the heart. Like the structural design of the worldwide Internet, if a single artery is blocked, blood finds other routes to the organ. Exercise helps this process to function even more efficiently.
As if the mere functioning of the pump itself were insufficient, modern technology is bringing to light yet another aspect of this little organ, small enough to sit within cupped hands. The heart beat; the act of contraction is also a sort of rhythm keeper keeping beat with the brain. The beats coincide with bursts of electric activity in the brain to keep the equilibrium of the organism on an equal keel. Together with the chemical information from the Adrenal glands, which allow the heart to increase its pumping rate, the body is maintained stably even during extremes such as fright or terrible grief.
